NIBAF Pakistan has announced an executive training programme focused on Trade-Based Money Laundering (TBML) awareness in trade finance, with the session scheduled to take place at its Karachi Campus on October 16, 2026. Titled “TBML Awareness in Trade Finance: Confidence, Compliance, and Control,” the one-day programme will focus on issues related to trade finance operations, compliance, risk management and controls, and is intended for professionals working across banking functions that handle or oversee trade-related transactions.
The training will run from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on October 16, providing participants with a full-day executive-level session on TBML awareness and related trade finance risks. NIBAF Pakistan has set the training investment at PKR 18,000 plus applicable tax per participant. The institute has also announced October 15, 2026, as the last date for nominations, allowing participating professionals and institutions to complete their registration before the scheduled training.
The target audience includes officials working at regional trade and credit hubs as well as staff involved in trade finance operations. Professionals from risk management, audit and compliance teams are also included in the programme, along with relationship managers serving corporate, commercial and retail banking customers. The broad target audience reflects the involvement of multiple banking functions in identifying, managing and controlling risks associated with trade finance activities.
The programme will be facilitated by Aqeel Muslim, Divisional Head of Trade Finance at Habib Metropolitan Bank. According to NIBAF Pakistan, Muslim has more than 30 years of banking experience across several financial institutions, including HBL, Credit Agricole Indosuez, NIB Bank, Standard Chartered, NBP and Habib Metropolitan Bank. He holds a Master’s degree in Finance and has worked across areas related to trade finance operations, controls and compliance.
Muslim’s professional specialization includes establishing centralized national trade hubs, implementing Internal Control over Financial Reporting (ICFR) and COSO frameworks within trade operations, and governing trade compliance risk. His experience across multiple banking institutions is expected to provide participants with practical perspectives on the operational and control considerations involved in trade finance. The programme’s focus on TBML awareness also places emphasis on the importance of compliance and risk controls within trade-related financial activities.
Trade-based money laundering involves the use of trade transactions and related mechanisms to move or disguise illicit funds, making trade finance controls an important area for financial institutions. The training announced by NIBAF Pakistan is structured around awareness, compliance and control, with participation open to professionals whose responsibilities include trade operations, risk management, auditing, compliance and customer relationships. The involvement of relationship managers also reflects the role that client-facing banking teams can play in trade finance processes and associated risk management.
The programme is being organized at a time when financial institutions continue to strengthen controls around trade transactions and compliance requirements. Effective oversight of trade finance requires coordination between operational teams, risk functions, compliance departments, auditors and relationship managers. Training programmes focused on TBML awareness can provide professionals with a dedicated setting to examine the risks and control considerations connected with trade finance activities.
