The Pakistan Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology (PINSTECH) and Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDC) have signed a contract aimed at strengthening institutional cooperation, including analytical support for OGDC’s lithium extraction initiative. The agreement was signed at OGDC Headquarters on Tuesday and brings together the research and analytical capabilities of PINSTECH with OGDC’s experience in the energy sector as the company explores opportunities related to lithium and other resources.
PINSTECH, established in 1965, is a research and development institute operating under the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC). Under the newly signed contract, the institute will provide OGDC with analytical services covering elemental profiling and radioactive-element analysis. These services are intended to provide scientific data that can support the company’s work associated with its lithium extraction initiative and its broader plans to diversify into emerging areas of the mineral and energy sectors.
The contract signing was witnessed by Dr. Shakeel Abbas Rofi, Member (Science) at PAEC, and Ahmed Hayat Lak, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of OGDC. Dr. Qamar-ul-Haque, Director General of PINSTECH, signed the agreement on behalf of the research institute, while Ejaz Abbas Rizvi, General Manager of OGDC’s Supply Chain Management Department, signed on behalf of the energy company. The signing represents a formal step toward expanding cooperation between the two organizations through scientific and technical services.
Speaking during the ceremony, Dr. Rofi and Lak expressed confidence that the agreement would strengthen cooperation between PINSTECH and OGDC. They said the collaboration would bring together the scientific and technical capabilities of the two organizations in support of national objectives. The partnership provides a framework for PINSTECH to contribute its analytical expertise while OGDC brings its experience and operational capabilities from the energy sector to initiatives involving mineral resources and related areas.
Munib Ahmed Shafique, Head of the Spectrometry Group at PINSTECH, delivered a presentation outlining the institute’s capabilities in elemental analysis. The presentation highlighted the technical expertise available within the organization for examining the composition of materials and identifying elements through specialized analytical techniques. Such analysis can provide important technical information for resource-related projects, particularly where detailed assessment of mineral composition is required.
Shagufta Shafique, Joint Engineer (Production) at OGDC, presented an overview of the company’s scope of work and diversification plans during the event. Her presentation included details of OGDC’s lithium extraction initiative being pursued in collaboration with PINSTECH. The initiative forms part of the company’s efforts to explore areas beyond its traditional oil and gas activities and assess opportunities associated with Pakistan’s mineral resources.
