Wateen, FoST Partner to Deploy GPON and AI-Based CCTV at FRTZ Karachi

Wateen Telecom has entered into an agreement with FonGreen Silicon Technologies (FoST), the official zone developer of the Foundation Renewable and Technology Zone (FRTZ) in Karachi, to deploy fiber-based connectivity and artificial intelligence-powered surveillance infrastructure across the technology zone.

Under the agreement, Wateen Telecom will provide a Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) throughout the FoST zone. The company will also install and integrate a CCTV and AI Vision Analytics system at the premises. The infrastructure is intended to provide high-capacity fiber connectivity alongside automated video monitoring capabilities for businesses and facilities operating within the zone.

FoST is developing FRTZ as a hub focused on renewable energy manufacturing and emerging technologies. The partnership with Wateen adds telecommunications and security infrastructure to the zone’s development plans. The agreement was signed by representatives of FonGreen Silicon Technologies and Wateen Telecom during a ceremony attended by senior officials from both organisations.

Under the terms of the partnership, Wateen will be responsible for designing, deploying, operating and maintaining the GPON network across the FoST zone. The fiber-based network will provide connectivity infrastructure for the facilities located within the development and is expected to support the communication requirements of enterprises and technology-related operations established there.

In addition to the connectivity network, Wateen will supply, install, integrate and commission a CCTV and AI Vision Analytics solution at FoST’s premises. The system will combine conventional camera-based surveillance with artificial intelligence-based video analytics. This approach allows video feeds to be processed through analytics technologies designed to identify and analyse activity captured by surveillance cameras.

Wateen will also provide continuous monitoring, maintenance and technical support for the duration of the agreement. The arrangement places responsibility for both the deployment and ongoing technical operation of the connectivity and surveillance systems with Wateen, covering the infrastructure throughout the term of the partnership.

The Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of FonGreen Silicon Technologies said the FRTZ development is intended to create an environment where renewable energy manufacturing and emerging technology industries can develop. The official said connectivity and intelligent security infrastructure would form part of the facilities required by enterprises operating within the zone.

The official added that FoST is seeking to develop industries that can create economic opportunities beyond the zone itself. The partnership with Wateen is expected to provide the digital connectivity and security infrastructure required for the operation of businesses and facilities as the technology zone develops.

Wateen Telecom Chief Executive Officer Adil Rashid said the partnership brings the company’s connectivity capabilities together with artificial intelligence-based security technology at FRTZ. He said the company would support the development of infrastructure at the zone as renewable energy and technology activities expand.

The deployment also highlights the increasing combination of high-speed fiber networks and AI-based surveillance systems in large-scale commercial and technology developments. GPON technology can provide shared fiber-based broadband infrastructure across multiple users and facilities, while AI-enabled video analytics can add automated processing capabilities to conventional CCTV systems.

For FRTZ, the two components will provide both connectivity and security infrastructure as the zone develops its planned renewable energy and technology-related activities. Wateen’s responsibilities will cover the full lifecycle of the systems, from network and surveillance deployment to operation, monitoring, maintenance and technical support.

The agreement represents a technology infrastructure component of the wider development of FRTZ in Karachi, with Wateen providing the GPON network and AI-enabled surveillance capabilities for the FoST zone. As development progresses, the infrastructure will support the connectivity and security requirements of enterprises operating within the renewable energy and emerging technology-focused development.
