The National Institute of Banking and Finance Pakistan has completed a specialized two-day executive training workshop focused on guiding commercial banks through systemic transitions toward Islamic financial frameworks. Held at the institute Lahore Campus from July 17 to July 18, 2026, the intensive face-to-face program was titled Leading the Transformation to Islamic Banking: Product Innovation, Shari’ah Structuring & Cultural Challenges. The tailored capacity-building initiative brought together selected operational leaders and executive officers from The Bank of Punjab to address the technical, regulatory, and cultural dimensions associated with converting conventional banking operations into fully Shariah-compliant models.
The training program was led by Imran Yusuf Sheikh, Head of Business Transformation at Faysal Bank, who served as the primary expert trainer across both days of instruction. Drawing on direct experience from Faysal Bank successful corporate conversion into a full-fledged Islamic financial institution, Sheikh delivered practical instruction on strategic roadmaps, liquidity management adjustments, balance sheet restructuring, and product engineering. His curriculum emphasized battle-tested operational methodologies designed to mitigate structural friction, streamline legacy asset conversions, and align institutional governance with regulatory standards set by the State Bank of Pakistan.
Throughout the interactive sessions, participating officers from The Bank of Punjab examined the multi-layered complexities of designing competitive Islamic financial products. The discussions covered complex Shariah structuring mechanisms across corporate, commercial, retail, and trade finance portfolios, highlighting how financial entities can maintain product flexibility while strictly adhering to Islamic jurisprudence. Participants explored practical case studies on converting conventional deposit pools and financing facilities into certified Islamic modes such as Murabaha, Ijarah, Diminishing Musharakah, and Salam, evaluating the precise accounting and risk management adjustments required for each asset class.
Beyond product mechanics and technical structuring, the training placed significant emphasis on managing organizational and cultural change during structural business transitions. Moving a conventional banking network toward Shariah compliance requires widespread workforce reskilling, altered operational workflows, updated risk assessment frameworks, and targeted customer communications. The sessions provided banking leaders with management tools to foster organizational buy-in, realign internal performance metrics, and address staff hesitation during system-wide transitions. By addressing internal culture alongside technical compliance, the program aimed to ensure that institutional shifts remain sustainable and client-focused across branch networks.
As a dedicated training subsidiary of the central bank, NIBAF Pakistan continues to play a central role in strengthening human capital across the domestic financial services sector. By organizing targeted executive sessions for commercial institutions like The Bank of Punjab, the institute supports broader national policy objectives aimed at expanding Islamic finance penetration and deepening financial inclusion across all provinces. The successful completion of this specialized program equips participating leadership teams with the operational clarity and strategic foresight required to execute seamless, value-driven transformations within Pakistan rapidly evolving commercial banking landscape.
